Johannesburg -

Radio and TV personality Robert Marawa appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with child maintenance after being labelled as a deadbeat dad by former girlfriend Zoe Mthiyane.

Marawa and Mthiyane were both present at court, together with their legal representatives, and agreed to postpone the matter to August for further discussions and hopefully reach a reasonable agreement.

Mthiyane has demanded R29 000 per month maintenance for her 3-year-old son.

According to heavily pregnant Mthiyane, the amount is reasonable, with R2 500 being for a driver, R1 625 for the child’s wardrobe, R100 for his toiletries, R1 427 for holidays, R1 350 for extramural activities, R8 750 for lodging and R4 970 and R1 400 for school fees and aftercare.

In April Mthiyane wrote an open letter expressing her rage about how the sportscaster had failed to support their 3-year-old son.

“I have attempted, on numerous occasions, to involve you in your son’s life before I left South Africa and during my stay in Australia. I have sent pictures, videos, called and e-mailed you, my son never heard from you,” Mthiyane wrote in the open letter.

According to the Sowetan newspaper, Marawa responded to the claims by stating:

“I’ve maintained from day one that I’m not here seeking media attention and sensationalising an issue pertaining to a minor child.

“I’ve always sought to gain access to my son and that’s what is important to me. People seeking to defame me will be dealt with… my lawyers are dealing with this issue and access to my son remains paramount.”
