Ekuhuleni - Commuters in the Katlehong area in Ekurhuleni on the East Rand will now breathe a sigh of relief with the opening of the newly constructed Phuthaditjaba taxi rank, the city said.

On Friday, residents of Katlehong expressed relief when mayoral committee member for transport and planning Petrus Mabunda handed over a R23 million facility to them, the city said in a statement.

“We are here to respond to the concerns you have raised in the integrated development plan concerning the need for a taxi rank. We are happy to hand it over to you with all the necessary amenities to make your travelling easy.

“This taxi rank will bring about improved taxi operations, convenience, and safety for pedestrians and road users,” Mabunda said.

The taxi rank would serve both commuters transported by Greater Alberton Taxi Association and Katlehong Peoples' Taxi Association.

Amenities available at the new taxi rank included an office building, public ablution facilities, hawker stalls, a wash bay, a sheltered loading area, a holding area, fencing, water and electricity, access roads, and an administration office, Mabunda said.
