Johannesburg - While people were ringing in the new year in a jovial manner, an officer in Braamfontein shot and killed a knife-wielding man who allegedly tried to attack him.

According to the Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubele, the deceased, believed to be in his early 30s, was in a fight with another man at about 4am.

Makhubele said police were driving along Wolmarans Street when they saw the fight and tried to intervene.

“The police saw him stabbing another man. The one who had a knife then tried to attack the police.”

He said police retaliated by shooting him and he died on the scene. Makhubele said the man who was stabbed by the dead man was recuperating in hospital. A case of attempted murder and an inquest docket have been opened.

He said that on New Year's Eve, two other people were stabbed in Hillbrow and taken to hospital.
