Light snow fell over Joburg on Friday morning, days after the unusual weather caused chaos in certain parts of the country this week.

South African Weather Services forecaster Karl Loots said the snowfall was caused by a weaker cold front that hit the country on Wednesday night.

Residents shouldn't get too excited as there would be no more snow expected for the rest of the day, he said.

“It's very light, and is not enough to stay put on the ground. Nothing more is expected for the day,” he said.

According to reports, snow fell in Auckland Park, Northcliff, Benoni and Boksburg.

The snowfall excited many residents as they updated their status on Facebook and Twitter.

Cathgrenfell said on Twitter: “It's apparently snowing in Boksburg. Please snow, come to Auckland park side, at least it will make this k** weather worthwhile!”

A few minutes later, a facebook status said: “It's Snowing in Auckland Park!!!, 100% sure, Little teeny tiny snowflakes, they barely make it to the ground”.

Ewnupdates Eyewitness News updated on Twitter: “RT @cathyjacobs01: @benitalevin @Radio702 @947Highveld EWN We had a few flakes in Benoni Industrial area, but it stopped now.”

Loots said that light snowfall was also expected over the high lying areas in KwaZulu Natal, the Eastern Cape, and Lesotho this weekend.

On Tuesday, snow fell heavily in the Warden, Harrismith and Van Reenen's Pass areas, reaching depths in excess of one metre in places.

As a result, many motorists and truck drivers were left stranded along the N3, which was re-opened on Wednesday evening.

The economic cost of road closures caused by snow falls in KwaZulu-Natal was an estimated R400 million, co-operative governance MEC Nomusa Dube said on Thursday. – Sapa
