Johannesburg - An Ekurhuleni man is facing attempted murder charges after a firearm was accidentally fired, leaving two people injured.

The incident allegedly happened at the East Rand Mall taxi rank at around 7pm on Monday evening.

Boksburg North police spokesperson Captain Juanita Coetzer explained that police were called to the scene and upon arrival found a group of taxi drivers waiting for South African Police Service members.

"The group explained that a firearm had been accidentally discharged after the owner tried to take it out from under a seat.

"Two passengers, who were seated in the taxi, were shot as a result."

These were a 30-year-old man, who was shot in the leg, and a woman, 33, who sustained injuries to her abdomen.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman explained that the two were stabilised at the scene before being transported by ambulances to different hospitals in the area for further assessment and care.

Coetzer confirmed that the owner of the gun was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

"These charges may change as investigations continue," she said.
