Johannesburg - A man has died and his wife was seriously injured when they were attacked in their tent near a dam in Fochville southwest of Johannesburg in Gauteng where they had been fishing, paramedics said on Sunday.
"At approximately 11pm on Saturday night paramedics attended the scene where they found a man with multiple fatal injuries. A woman was found with various injuries and severely traumatised," ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.
"It is understood that the couple spent the evening in their tent next to the dam where they were fishing during the day.
"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident is not yet known. Local authorities attended the scene and will investigate," Vermaak said.
Police confirmed on Sunday that a case of murder, assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm and Robbery with a weapon was opened.
"The deceased, a 58-year-old man and his wife, 52, from Langkloof street Glenharve, Westonaria were camping for the weekend at the dam. They were overpowered by two unknown males. The deceased was stabbed with a knife in the left side of his chest and beaten with a rock on the left side of his head. The wife was assaulted with a hammer on her hands and body," said Gauteng police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.
The suspects left the crime scene on foot with cash and a cellphone. No arrests have been made, Dlamini said.
