Johannesburg - A manhunt has been launched for a group of suspects after an officer was shot and wounded in Soweto on Monday morning.

The officer, from the Protea Glen police station, was wounded while carrying out a routine vehicle check in Protea Glen at around 2am

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, the incident unfolded after the officer and a colleague ordered the driver of a sedan to stop at Impala Road close to the N12 on-ramp.

"As they were approaching the sedan, unknown occupants in a blue light delivery vehicle fired shots at the police officers and fled.

"A constable sustained wounds to his lower abdomen and legs while his colleague managed to escape unscathed.

The injured officer was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Naidoo said the motive for the shooting was not yet known and that no arrests had yet been made.
