Johannesburg - A memorial service for Health Department spokesperson Joe Maila is set to be held later on this week in Polokwane, his family confirmed on Monday. 

Maila died following a shooting accident at a rifle range in Pretoria on Thursday evening. He was 48. 

His family in a statement said the memorial service would be held on Wednesday in Polokwane. 

"The memorial service is open to all members of the public who wish to be part of the event in celebration and remembrance of Buti Joe, as he was affectionally known.

"The members of the public are also advised that there will be daily prayer sessions at the Maila household."

The memorial service will begin at 12pm, his family confirmed. 

 

Maila's family once again extended its gratitude "for the support it has received and continues to receive from his friends, colleagues in government, the media and members of the public.

 

Another memorial service will be held in Pretoria but the family said details would be once announced once everything is finalised.
