JOHANNESBURG - A newborn baby girl has been found and rescued in a field in Fairland in Johannesburg, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics were alerted to the incident by the local authorities and arrived at the police station shortly after 4pm on Friday afternoon, ER24 spokeswoman Ineke van Huyssteen said in a statement.

"Upon further assessment, paramedics found the baby girl wrapped in a towel. ER24 paramedics assessed the baby and found that she had sustained no visible injuries. Paramedics transported her to hospital for further medical care."

It was understood that a member of the public found the baby in a bush before taking her to the police station. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident were not known to paramedics, Van Huyssteen said.
