Johannesburg - Gauteng police on Tuesday confirmed they were investigating the death of two community members at the hands of an off-duty police officer. 

The incident reportedly happened at around 10am on Tuesday morning at the City Deep flats in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD). 

According to provincial spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo, the shooting incident happened after the police officer got into an argument with the victims. 

"He [then] shot two of them, who died instantly, and injured two more community members.

The injured community members were then transported to the nearest hospital.

Masondo confirmed that police were then called to the scene and when they arrived, the officer shot at the police, who then retaliated. 

"The officer was then wounded... and was taken to hospital, where he later died of his injuries," Masondo said. 

He confirmed that the matter currently being investigated.
