Ekurhuleni - A young woman was killed and four other people, including a three-year-old toddler, were seriously injured when a wall collapsed in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni on Friday night, the City of Ekurhuleni said.

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team responded swiftly to the corner of Turton and Hlakwana streets in Basothong section in Daveyton, spokesman William Ntladi said on Saturday.

"The deadly incident call was received around [6.40pm] in the evening. [A] Rescue pumper, ambulances, and primary response vehicle all responded to the scene to render pre-hospital medical interventions," he said.

"The deceased was found under the crumpled wall and couldn't respond to the medical treatment given. She was declared dead on [the] scene by the paramedics. The other two young female patients, a male, and a toddler of about three years of age, all were transported by ambulances to [the] Far East Rand Hospital in serious conditions for further medical care."

The reason for the wall's collapse was not yet known, but information received on the scene indicated that strong wind might have been the cause. Police were investigating, Ntladi said.
