Johannesburg - A number of schools in Gauteng will not be able to resume on the first day of the 2018 academic year due to damage from recent storms and vandalism over the festive season.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) issued a list of more than 20 schools that would not be able to resume on 17 January due to storm damage, among them Lenasia Secondary School, Ormonde Primary School, Buhlepark Primary School, Krugersdorp High School and Ratanda Primary School.

In addition, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said that there were schools in the province that had been vandalised and broken into over the festive season which were also a set back for the department.

The GDE listed four schools in the Tshwane area that were affected which included Sekhulisile, Soshanguve South, Mahlenga and Tlatlogang.

Lesufi said aside from the damaged schools the department was ready to commence the academic year.
