Ekurhuleni - The Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality in Gauteng on Tuesday urged residents and businesses to use water sparingly as parts of Germiston ran out of water.

Large parts of South Africa is in the midst of a heatwave and coupled with a long-standing drought, water supply is under severe strain.

The Ekurhuleni municipality on Tuesday issued a notice to say that there was currently no water in the following areas of Germiston:

Dawnview

Gerdview

Marlands

Germiston CBD

Elsburg

Lambton

Fishers Hill

Wadeville

Bedfordview

Primrose Hill

Sunny Rock

The EMM was, however, providing water tankers at the following locations:

Opposite Old Marlands Swimming Pool near Solly’s Supermark

Corner Elbertfield Avenue and Windsor Street

Howe Circle

Corner Jubilee and Ralston Avenues

Corner Fourth Avenue and Pipe Street

Corner Riley Road and Van Buuren Road, Bedfordview

Van Buuren Road (east of Harper Road) in front of Virgin Active

Parking area at KFC, Kirkby Road, Bedford Gardens

Corner Lucas Lane and Norman Road, Bedfordview (in front of Hyundai)

Corner Fairway Avenue and Penthurst Avenue, Essexwold

The municipality also warned that levels in the reservoirs supplying certain areas were at a critical level which could lead to low water pressure:

Consumers in all areas of Ekurhuleni were requested to adhere to the following measures:

No filling of swimming pools

No gardening and irrigation at all unless you make use of grey water

No water washing of pavements and cars

Reduce showering time and capture in buckets the cold water that initially comes from the showers

Repair leaking cisterns

“If the situation in all of the areas above deteriorates further, the EMM will implement water shedding measures and shut off supply from 10pm-3pm.”
