Johannesburg - A vehicle workshop employee knocked down and killed a pedestrian while driving a City of Johannesburg ambulance that had been booked in for repairs.
The city's safety MEC Michael Sun said the accident took place on Saturday along the Main Reef Road. The employee had taken the vehicle for a joy ride without permission.
''We are shocked to hear the news of the killing of a pedestrian as a result of the unauthorised driving of the city EMS ambulance by a workshop employee. When we appoint service providers to repair and maintain our ambulances and patrol cars, we trust that they will conduct themselves with the highest level of professionalism and care when handling our vehicles. We will leave no stone unturned and will get to the bottom of this tragedy,'' Sun said in a statement on Monday.
''We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, we will be visiting the family members and extend the city’s assistance where we can.''
A police investigation into the accident continues.
