Johannesburg - A speeding commuter train slammed into another between Booysens and Crown on Friday night leaving hundreds of people injured.

The crash took place around 6pm when trains heading to Soweto were involved.

A Metrorail spokesperson said 239 people were hurt, 100 of them seriously.

This is the second such train crash in four months, after a woman was killed when a moving train crashed into a stationary one in Denver Station south-eastern Joburg in April. Passenger Rail Agency of SA said it would give reasons after investigation into how a moving train could crash into a stationary one.

On Friday one commuter labelled the Booysens crash as “stupid”.

Some passengers were able to stumble out of the wreckage and walk along the railway down the bridge while others were helped out.

Paramedics on the scene said a number of commuters – an estimated 100 - were seriously injured while others escaped with minor injuries. The injured were taken to hospital. Commuters who were left stranded vented their frustration on the Metrorail officials on the scene accusing metro of being “useless”.

“The one train had stopped because of a signal when another came from behind us hooting and smashed into its back,” said one commuter.

“Clearly there was speed involved but the signal control also is a problem here because how come it stopped the one train while another was coming from behind?”

Several other commuters said the rail system was a “disaster” that needed to be investigated thoroughly.
