Johannesburg - Two people were arrested during a raid by police and the army at Kwa-Madala hostel in Alexandra, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

One of them was arrested for being in possession of a SA National Defence Force uniform, said police spokeswoman Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

“Another person was arrested for dealing in liquor without a licence,” she said.

Police also seized a suspected stolen laptop, a panga and 9kg of dagga.

The midnight raid was conducted to search for weapons as a wave of xenophobic violence has so far claimed seven lives in troubled spots in Durban and Johannesburg.

The government deployed the army in Alexandra township on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, police, backed by the army, raided a men’s hostel in Jeppestown, in central Johannesburg. Eleven people were arrested for possession of stolen goods and dagga.
