Johannesburg - OPERATIONS had to be abandoned after a generator failed to come online automatically when a power outage hit Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital on Friday.

Electricity went out at the City Power-fed hospital at about 2pm. Only 13 of the hospital’s 14 generators continued to supply power. Operating theatres were hit hardest.

“The 9 000-litre capacity generator that supports the theatres could not kick in, leaving only the three emergency theatres operational,” said hospital spokesman Monde Ntebe. “Technicians battled to manage the intermittent interruptions until full restoration of power was maintained.”

DA health spokesman Jack Bloom said operations under way at the time of the power failure had to be abandoned.
