An explosion at a power station in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, was possibly caused by cable faults, Ekurhuleni metro municipality said on Saturday.

“... At this stage it looks like the Bonaero Park feeder cables caused the fault,” spokesman Themba Gadebe said in a statement.

He said the findings were based on preliminary investigations, with engineers to confirm the findings once new equipment had been installed and the repair process was completed.

All the substations' maintenance schedules were up to date, Gadebe said.

The explosion occurred at Aston Manor substation around 2am on Friday, leaving most suburbs in the area without power.

Affected areas included Aston Manor, Nimrod Park, Bonaero Park, and parts of Pomona and Glen Marais. - Sapa
