Johannesburg - A fire at a power station in Roodepoort on Monday morning left the area without electricity, and resulted in traffic jams, said Johannesburg metro police.

“There's a power station that is on fire on Van Wyk street in Roodepoort,” said Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

“As a result, it is affecting the functionality of power lights in the Roodepoort area.”

Minnaar said power was expected to be out for the rest of the day.

City Power officials could not immediately comment on the fire or power outage.

Minnaar said morning traffic was “very, very heavy” as a result of the power outage.
