Pretoria - At least two people sustained critical burn wounds at a fire at a building in Erasmia, Centurion in Pretoria, a private ambulance service said on Monday.

ER24 said its paramedics arrived at the building just after 11am on Monday to find firefighters battling the blaze while the injured were being treated outside.

"Upon assessment, paramedics found that two people had sustained critical burn wounds while the five others had sustained minor to moderate injuries," a statement from the paramedic service said.

"The patients were treated for their injuries, and the two critically injured provided with advanced life support interventions, before they were transported to nearby hospitals for further attention."

"The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations."

Police have opened an inquest into the cause of the fire.
