Pretoria - Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) will join the ranks of many government departments and utilities that are consolidating their operations under one roof when it relocates to a new state-of-the-art R1.4 billion head offices in 2016.

The new building will be located near the Freedom Park cultural institution and museum in Salvokop, on government-owned land bordered by Koch and 6th streets, as well as the Pretoria railway station.

The City of Tshwane is also in the process of building its own head offices in the city centre, which will accommodate all its operations. It will be completed in 2016. Like Stats SA, Tshwane’s administration and departments are currently working from various buildings across the city.

Stats SA spokeswoman Lesedi Dibakwane said various divisions within the country’s national statistical service have been operating from four buildings located in different parts of the capital city.

The move to the new building will result in an integration of four buildings into one operation and service centre, Dibakwane said.

Stats SA has a workforce of about 3 000 who will all be accommodated in the new building.

The design of the building will be in the shape of a drum with five “fingers” linked by an internal street and a separate data processing centre.

The new building will also include the restoration of Nzasm Village. The historical buildings are more than 100 years old and are adjacent to the new head offices. The village is a distinct feature, and the central cluster of concentric buildings have to be retained and incorporated into the new complex.

The capital expenditure for the project is R1.4bn, of which the national government will contribute R600 million.

The Dipalopalo Consortium – whose shareholders include listed WBHO, Royal Bafokeng Astrapak and Servest – has been awarded a 25-year contract to finance, design, build and operate the new head office on behalf of Stats SA.

Dibakwane said the current head offices in Thabo Sehume Street, as well as other buildings from where Stats SA current operated, would be leased.
