Johannesburg – Two people were killed on Monday afternoon when their light aircraft crashed and caught alight at Mountain View, near the Lanseria Airport in Johannesburg.
Netcare911 paramedics said two people were declared dead on the scene in an aircraft crash near the R512, just 10 kilometres away from the Lanseria Airport, close to the Lesedi Cultural Village.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, which happened just after 4:30pm, but the occupants of the light aircraft were believed to be a man and a woman.
Spokeswoman for Lanseria airport, Claudette Vianello, said two people died in the crash, but it had not affected operations at the airport.
“The crash did not happen at Lanseria, but near the airport along the way Haartebeespoort,” Vianello said.
Asked whether the aircraft had taken off from Lanseria or was approaching the airport, Vianello said she did not have knowledge of the plane’s particulars with regards to that.
But reports on social media claimed the plane crashed soon after taking off from Lanseria Airport.
The SAPS and Civil Aviation Authority were investigating the cause of the crash.
A witness said the plane crashed and caught alight. The man said the flames were too hot and high for anyone to attempt to rescue the man and woman inside the plane.
