Johannesburg - Two people died and two other people were injured on Thursday, when a truck and light motor vehicle collided on the N3 highway at the Applesden turn in Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu Natal, paramedics said.

"ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene to find both the truck and light motor vehicle on the side of the road at the bottom of an embankment," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

"The light motor vehicle was found partially beneath the bed of the truck. Several trees had collapsed and fallen onto the truck."

Meieing said upon inspection, paramedics discovered that two men, one from each vehicle, had sustained numerous, fatal injuries.

"Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead."

He said two other patients were found on scene by paramedics, and they were assessed and found with minor to moderate injuries.

"Paramedics treated the patients and thereafter transported them to nearby provincial hospitals for further care," Meiring said.

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
