Johannesburg - A young woman who has a four-month-old baby was among those arrested at the University of Johannesburg’s Kingsway campus on Friday afternoon.

By late Friday night, the mother and representatives from the Centre for Applied Legal Studies(CALS), were making arrangements with a neighbour to collect the child from daycare while she remain behind bars. It is still unclear whether the mother has been charged or will be released later on Friday night.

“We managed to phone one of the people inside the holding cells to give her the phone while she communicated with the neighbour. We can confirm that the child is being cared for by the neighbour,” said Wandisa Phama from CALS.

Just after 8.pm, over 140 people were detained at the Brixton police station after protests over the outsourcing of cleaning and security personnel at University of Johannesburg (UJ). These included both students and workers from UJ and some of from Wits universities.

About 100 people gathered outside the station and chanted. They vowed to remain until their colleagues and classmates were been released.
