Johannesburg - The ANC's Geoff Makhubo has been elected the new mayor of the City Of Johannesburg.

Makhubo won the vote by a landslide, getting 137 votes to DA candidate Funzela Ngobeni's 101 votes and the EFF candidate Musa Novela's 30 votes.

There has been much uncertainty since Herman Mashaba tendered his resignation as mayor and member of the DA on October 21.

The vote for a new leader of the metro was postponed last week when council speaker Vasco DA Gama sought legal advice to get clarity on the procedure to be followed in electing Johannesburg’s new leader.

The ANC had insisted that it would push ahead for the election of its Johannesburg mayoral candidate Geoff Makhubo despite appeals from the EFF to drop him in exchange for its support.

The EFF’s Floyd Shivambu made it clear that they would not be supporting the new mayor as they believe he is tainted and cannot be trusted to lead the city effectively and ethically.
