Nairobi - Delegates to Kenya's constitutional conference have adopted a new draft constitution for the country after 629 delegates who have been debating the document for nearly a year finished their work, the chairperson of the commission in charge of constitutional review said on Tuesday.
Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC) chairman Yash Pal Ghai told a plenary session of the National Constitutional Conference in Nairobi that "every decision we made over the last few weeks, including last night, was made by at least two-thirds vote".
The constitutional conference will be formally disbanded at a ceremony on Friday, when delegates will formally endorse the draft constitution.
The process of revamping Kenya's basic law for the first time since independence in 1963 started on April 30 last year after four years of collecting views from the public at a cost of $50-
million.
The CRKC will hand the draft constitution to the attorney general, who will in turn present it to parliament for the debate and adoption. - Sapa-AFP
