Cape Town mayoral committee member Simon Grindrod plans to sue alleged "sex blogger" Juan Uys, he said on Friday.

Uys, arrested in Kroonstad last week, is to appear in the Cape Town magistrates court on Monday on a charge of theft dating back to 2004.

Grindrod, who is also deputy president of the Independent Democrats, said on Friday he would be at court "to see for myself the man behind the many masks he has created for himself".

"I will also be releasing details of a civil suit against Juan Uys," he said.

Uys, who uses a number of aliases, has been linked to a blog which claimed that Grindrod and a number of other prominent South Africans had been using the services of a male prostitute.

"I am hopeful that the arrest and identification of Juan Uys will finally bring to an end the years of harm and damage this sick individual has caused to so many," Grindrod said.

Uys, who at one time led the Gay and Lesbian Alliance, which he claimed was an organisation with thousands of members, has also been linked to the "Neil Watson" who ran a website on crime in South Africa.

Uys was arrested in Kroonstad on July 21, appeared in the local magistrates court soon after, and was released on R2 000 bail with a warning to appear in the Cape Town court on Monday. - Sapa
