The price of petrol dropped 27 cents a litre to R3,61 from midnight on Tuesday night.

This second drop in cost in the past month is a result of the strengthening of the rand against the American dollar and the decrease in international fuel prices, said Petro Kruger, the Automobile Association's divisional manager for corporate affairs.

In May, the price of petrol decreased 38 cents per litre after a slight increase of four cents per litre in April.

The price of petrol has fallen 14 percent since June 2002.

"It's a huge impact on transport costs of consumer goods. It means savings to consumers," Kruger said.

There will also be a decrease of 40 cents per litre for the wholesale price of 0,3 percent sulphur, and a 44 cents per litre price drop for 0.05 petrol sulphur diesel.

Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has approved a single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin.

The drop of petrol prices is not expected to continue at the same rate, as the rand has recently lost ground.
