Johannesburg - Earlier today our IOL Twitter account was compromised. We were promptly alerted to the problem by many readers and we took immediate action.
During the short time that the account was compromised hundreds of tweets were posted on our timeline, many of which were offensive and inappropriate. For that we apologise. We have now removed those tweets from the account.
Now that we have restored the @IOL account we are investigating the cause of the compromise so that we can prevent similar events in future.
We regret the interruption and are sorry for any offence caused.
