While many did their bit for the less fortunate during yesterday’s 67 minutes, some women were bringing new life into our world, newborns who they hope might one day achieve great things like Madiba.
Sixteen babies were born at uMlazi’s Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital on Wedesnday from just after midnight until 10am – most of whom were boys.
“I have brought my own hero into the world. Because Mandela made a difference in this country, it is clear that my son will also achieve great things in his lifetime,” said Nonkoliso Senzela, 24, who gave birth to Lwando at 4am.
Matron Busisiwe Mhlongo said that of the 16 babies, 12 were boys and four were girls – an unusual occurrence.
First-time mother Sane Ngcobo said she felt privileged to have given birth on Madiba’s birthday, and said it would be exciting to celebrate her son’s birthday each year.
“Mandela means a lot to many South Africans. To have given up his life and spending many years in prison is something selfless. I have huge hopes for my son’s future and, who knows, he might be our next president,” said Ngcobo from KwaMakhutha, while holding her son, Smanga.
Meanwhile, at Addington Hospital, three babies were born yesterday and one of the mothers, Thembeni Skhwama, said her nephew had playfully predicted she would give birth on Madiba’s birthday.
“My sister has another child who shares a birthday with Madiba and one of her sons told me that I would give birth on this day,” she said.
Skhwama was in labour for three hours, giving birth at 3am to a son who would only be named once his grandfather had met him. - Daily News
