Durban - Seventeen people were injured when a truck overturned and rolled down a steep embankment near Newcastle on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

It was believed the driver lost control when he swerved to avoid a cow on the road, said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak

“The (17) construction workers, believed to have been on the back of the truck, were found lying around it when paramedics arrived,” Vermaak said.

Paramedics found the truck at the bottom of an embankment on the R34. The accident happened around 2am.

“The exact cause of the incident is not yet known, but it's understood from some of the injured that the driver swerved out for a cow in the road and apparently lost control over the vehicle,” said Vermaak.

They were all treated on scene and taken to a nearby hospital. - Sapa
