Durban -

At least four children were killed when a bakkie crashed into a dam in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Monday, emergency services said.

Police divers would continue searching the dam, provincial emergency services spokesman Robert McKenzie said in a statement.

“The rescuers and divers from police search and rescue... have sadly recovered the bodies of four children from the dam and are continuing to search. The vehicle, which is completely submerged in the water, also still needs to be located.”

Another 25 school children escaped serious injury, but suffered from hypothermia.

“The accident involved a single vehicle, which according to bystanders was a bakkie, left the road and crashed into a farm dam earlier this morning,” McKenzie said.

“Paramedics from KZN EMS responded to the scene to discover 25 wet and cold school children, who had managed to rescue themselves out of the icy water.”

The accident happened on the D532 in the Mooi River area of the Midlands.

“Fortunately these children had only minor injuries and hypothermia was a greater concern.” - Sapa
