Pietermaritzburg - A motorcyclist was killed in a collision between a truck, a car, and two motorbikes on the N3 near the Lynnfield turn-off outside Pietermaritzburg on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the body of a man, believed to be in his 40s, lying in the left lane of the highway. A second biker was found walking around on the scene about 50 metres away, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

"Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained a significant head injury and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his injuries. Nothing could be done and he was declared dead," he said.

The second biker was assessed and found to have sustained minor injuries. The man was treated for his injuries and thereafter transported to Northdale Provincial Hospital for further care. The drivers of the car and truck escaped injury. The cause of the accident was unknown.
