The body of a Stanger man who drowned at Prince’s Grant beach on the North Coast was recovered after a short search yesterday afternoon.

Aaron Konar, 23, had been swimming in the lagoon when he got into distress in the water, said ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks.

Bystanders alerted authorities to the incident and an extensive search by National Sea Rescue Institute, Lifesaving SA lifeguards, SAPS, the ER24 Discovery Surf Rescue helicopter and the KwaDakuza Fire and Rescue Services was launched.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said the young man’s body had washed up on the beach about an hour later.

It had been handed over to the forensic pathology services, he said.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said an inquest docket had been opened.

Another incident at sea yesterday involved a stand-up paddle boarder who had been reported missing from the Glen Ashley beach in the morning.

Lambinon said the paddle boarder had been seen by eye-witnesses off-shore of Glen Ashley beach, and also in the vicinity of Blue Lagoon.

He had been moving quickly, quite far out to sea, in the direction of Durban’s main beaches towards Durban city.

A massive search was launched but it had yielded no results by late yesterday.

Lambinon said today the man had phoned them to say he was safe, and had not been aware that they were searching for him.
