Durban – A woman has been airlifted to hospital after she was critically injured when she was struck by an out-of-control bakkie in Westmead in Durban on Saturday night, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 paramedics responded to reports of an accident on Westmead Drive in Westmead, Netcare 911 spokesman Shawn Herbst said in a statement on Sunday.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the driver of a light delivery vehicle lost control, resulting in the vehicle leaving the road [and] crashing into a woman standing at a gate at her place of employment."

The woman sustained critical injuries and was treated on the scene by a Netcare 911 emergency care practitioner.

Due to the nature of the woman's injuries, the Netcare 5 specialised helicopter ambulance was activated to airlift her to a specialist facility for the care she required.

The driver of the bakkie, an adult man, was not injured in the accident, Herbst said.
