Eight killed, 72 injured in horror truck crash in KZN

Durban - Eight people died and 72 others were injured in a horrific crash in the Babanango area of Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, when the truck they were travelling in overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Five people died on the scene and three people died later in hospital. 

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the driver of the truck appeared in court on Monday. He has been charged with eight counts of culpable homicide and one count of drinking and driving. 

Zwane said the man had tested positive for alcohol at the scene.

Kwanele Ncalane, a spokesperson in the KZN Department of Transport, confirmed the incident on Monday.

Ncalane said the MEC had sent road safety officials to the scene. Representatives of the office of the MEC, RTI, and Road Safety Department were also visiting the crash scene.
