An elderly couple were left shocked and traumatised after they were bound – and the man pistol whipped – during a violent home invasion at the weekend.

The owner of the property, who asked that his identity be withheld, said five men armed with two handguns and two larger firearms stormed the La Lucia property at around 6pm on Friday.

“They parked on the street, chained their car to the gate and used it to pull the gate from its motor,” he said. “Then they broke down the security gate and the door.”

He said the the couple were in their 70s and that they were out when the men broke in, but arrived home to find them still there.

“They tied them up and hit the man on the back of his head, with the butt of one of the guns,” he said. “They wanted the safe but there wasn’t one”.

He said the gang got away with jewellery and electronics valued at thousands of rand.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed the incident.

“A case of house robbery was opened at Durban North police station and no arrest has been made at this stage,” she said on Sunday afternoon.
