Durban - Five men have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of an 81-year-old Bulwer man.

According to police, Michael John Poval was attacked and killed at his home in Bulwer Village on Saturday.

The man’s body had been discovered by his family in the boot of his car a day after the killing. He had been stabbed in the back.

It is believed Poval, who lived alone, was confronted by a group of suspects at his home on Saturday.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said: “The suspects stabbed him and stuffed his body into the boot of his vehicle.

They then took the victim’s cash box containing his cash and fled in his second motor vehicle.”

Later that day, a friend of Poval’s delivered a parcel to him and found the house open, with Poval nowhere in sight.

Zwane said the woman returned the following day and discovered the house still open and the parcel untouched.

She contacted Poval’s relatives who came to the house. Upon searching for Poval, they discovered his body in the boot of his vehicle and noticed that his second car and his cash box were missing.

They alerted police.

“Police immediately conducted a search for the suspects and the stolen vehicle,” said Zwane.

On Sunday night, members of the SAPS Pietermaritzburg organised crime unit noticed the stolen vehicle, occupied by five men, travelling along the Edendale Main Road and a chase ensued.

The vehicle was cornered. The occupants were all arrested and the cash was recovered.

The five, aged between 17 and 35, were expected to appear in the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court this week on charges of murder and robbery.
