Durban - Five people were killed and four others injured on Sunday afternoon when an SUV crashed into the centre median and rolled down an embankment on the N3 highway in the Westville North area.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene to find the vehicle lying on its roof in the centre median. Several occupants were trapped inside the vehicle while some others were found lying outside the vehicle.

ER24’s Russel Meiring said paramedics assessed the patients and found that five had sustained fatal injuries. They were declared dead on the the scene.

“Four other patients were assessed by paramedics. Two were found seriously injured while two others had sustained critical injuries,” said Meiring.

He said paramedics immediately treated the patients and provided them with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the patients were transported to nearby hospitals.

“Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life to later free the deceased. The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” said Meiring.
