Newcastle - Four people were killed and 17 others were injured when a minibus taxi and a car collided on the R34 near Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday night, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene shortly before 7pm, finding both wrecked vehicles in the middle of the road. Several patients were found lying around the two vehicles, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

Several other services were already on the scene assessing the patients. Upon closer inspection, paramedics found the lifeless bodies of four people on the scene.

All four had already succumbed to their injuries. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead by another service. Seventeen other patients were found on the scene. Assessments showed that the injuries sustained ranged from minor to moderate.

Paramedics treated the patients and then transported them to various hospitals in the area for urgent treatment. The details surrounding this incident were not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations, Meiring said.
