Durban - The State  has added four more accused to its criminal case against  EnviroServ. The matter came before the Durban Regional Court on Thursday.

State advocate Yuri Gangai said EnviroServ CEO Dean Thompson, coastal operations manager Clive Kidd, group technical director Esme Gombault and treatment and disposal specialist Dr Johan Schoonraad were now also being charged.

EnviroServ - and now these four - stand accused of contravening the National Air Quality Act.This in connection with the foul smell residents in Durban's Upper Highway area say emanates from the Shongweni site.

EnviroServ workers were also at court... they were protesting against the court action, saying their livelihoods were at risk:

A criminal case against EnviroServ was opened in April. At that stage, however, only the company was being charged.

Residents from the area were at court on Thursday and so were EnviroServ workers. The workers are opposed to the court action.

They say the allegations against EnviroServ are unfounded and that their livelihoods are at risk. The matter is due back in court in November.
