Durban Metro Police have cleared up the curious case of an officer using a hand-held camera to take pictures of motorists on the N3 western freeway last week.

The officer was photographed leaning over the concrete barrier dividing the outgoing and incoming traffic on the western freeway and it was published in The Independent on Saturday last week.

A section of the red lane was cordoned off on the west-bound lane and he was taking pictures of motorists driving into Durban and using the public transport lane, using a small, hand-held camera.

Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi initially said it was “unusual” for a Metro officer to use a hand-held camera.

This week, however, Msomi said: “I have received confirmation from our freeway patrol section that the person in the photo is one of our members on official duty, taking pictures of a taxi accident location that had occurred earlier on the day for official purposes.” – Independent on Saturday
