Early on Sunday, Durban Central K9 Unit members were conducting an operation in Umbilo and the Berea when a vehicle with four occupants was spotted and pulled over in Moore Road. 

 

After a search of the vehicle and occupants, police confiscated three unlicensed firearms and housebreaking implements in their possession. 

 

“All the suspects were immediately arrested and taken to Umbilo police station for detention,” said police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

 

She said initial investigations revealed that the suspects’ vehicle was stolen from a business premises during a robbery incident in Lancers Road in the Durban CBD, two weeks earlier. 

 

“Suspects will be charged for possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of housebreaking implements, possession of stolen property and will also be linked to the business robbery case that was opened at Durban Central police station,” said Mbhele.

 

She said they would appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the firearms would be tested to determine whether they were used in any previous crimes. All three firearms had their serial numbers filed off.

 

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the vigilance of the police officers which led to the arrest and recovery of firearms and stolen vehicle.
