Durban - The eThekwini Municipality has issued a warning to residents to take the weather alerts issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) seriously.
City manager, Sipho Nzuza, said the municipality’s disaster management teams are on standby to respond to any disaster that may be a result of severe thunderstorms and rough seas as forecast by SAWS.
“Our disaster management teams are well equipped to deal with any disaster within the city. But we need our communities to work with us by heeding our warnings at all times. We are now right in the middle of the summer season and all of us are fully aware how prone our city is to disasters emanating from bad weather at this time of the year,” he said.
Earlier on Tuesday, SAWS issued a warning for gale force winds and thunderstorms over the interior parts of the province.
The alert indicates that lightning, flash flooding, very strong winds, hail and in some cases, tornadoes can be expected.
KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube said disaster management teams across the province have also been placed on standby in the event of emergencies.
