Man held for five rapes

Durban - A 40-year-old man was arrested in Verulam on Wednesday for five rapes in the Waterloo area, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The cases dated back to April 2013, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

In some instances, the man forced men to watch while he raped their girlfriends.

Zwane said the most recent case was reported on Tuesday.

A 27-year-old woman was walking with her boyfriend when the man held them up with a firearm at 10.15pm.

“The victim was raped in front of her boyfriend. A case of rape was opened at Verulam police station.”

He said the man was seen in the area on Wednesday morning, police were informed and he was arrested.

He would appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Friday.

In another case, a 21-year-old man was arrested for murder and attempted murder on Wednesday.

“It is alleged that the suspect approached two victims near Osindisweni area on December 31, and stabbed both of them with a knife after an argument.”

Nkosikhona Zwane, 20, died at the scene and the second victim was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Their assailant would appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Friday. - Sapa
