Cape Town - A 29-year-old man appeared briefly in the Hlabisa Magistrate's court on Monday in connection with the sexual assault and murder of his two-year-old stepdaughter, police in KwaZulu-Natal said.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele said Ndukenhle Siboniso Mazibuko was arrested at his "hideout" in Nongoma last week after being on the run from police for almost a month.

"It is alleged that on 14 October 2018 at 16:00, a two-year-old child was fatally assaulted with a wooden stick because she had messed herself," Mbele said.

"She was then taken to the private mortuary and the employees were informed the child could not breathe. During the examination, it was discovered that she was fatally assaulted and had been sexually assaulted."

Mazibuko will appear in court again on November 20 for a formal bail application.
