A man escaped with only scratches and bruises after falling about 50m through a bush from the top edge of Howick Falls in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Friday’s rescue of the 28-year-old man was the second in five days at the popular tourist attraction. Last Monday Zama Vilakazi held on to a small slippery rock for about 30 minutes until she was rescued.

ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said on Sunday that paramedics were called out to Friday afternoon’s incident after a man had been seen falling from a ledge through the bush.

“When paramedics arrived they were unable to get to the man,” she said.

“Paramedics called in the local SAPS Search and Rescue unit. Within minutes members of the unit were on scene, with the rescuers going down to where the man lay.”

“The man was in a stable condition and was hoisted up to the top of the ledge,” Jackson said, adding that he had “miraculously not sustained any serious injuries”. - Daily News
