Durban - A Metro police officer was killed on Thursday when he was knocked over by a taxi which overtook a vehicle he was trying to stop on the M13 near Kloof.

Lee Bryant, operations manager for Meditech who attended the scene, said the officer had been hailing a vehicle on the highway when the taxi came hurtling from behind, hitting him head on. “He was flung quite far from the taxi and we assume he died instantly.”

Metro police spokesman, Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi, said the incident was subject to a police investigation. The driver of the taxi was arrested after the dead officer’s partner called for back-up.

In a separate accident, 15 people were injured when a bakkie and taxi collided in Shongweni Road in Shongweni, on Thursday.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived to find the bakkie parked on the side of the road and the taxi upside down at the bottom of an embankment.
