Durban – Paying a staggering R100 000 for a birthday bash for her 4-year-old daughter has raised many an eyebrow, but Kavitha Nerputh has shrugged off the criticisms.
The Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, businesswoman said that when it came to her children, money was no object.
Nerputh, 39, treated 150 children to a carnival-themed party last Wednesday when her daughter, Zia, turned four.
The mother of three turned the grounds of Zia’s pre-school, Sunnylea, into a carnival, with stilt walkers, ponies, clowns, magicians, ribbon dancers, jumping castles, face painters and cartoon mascots.
Nerputh enlisted the help of a party planner and caterer.
“We decided on the carnival theme because it catered for both boys and girls. Zia was so thrilled when she saw everything. We had a five-tier cake that was breathtaking with ice-cream cones, candy-coated popcorn and a huge cupcake on top.”
Nerputh had a tent for parents as well as a food and candy buffet for parents and children.
“I have taken a lot of flak for throwing such an extravagant party for my daughter but when it comes to my children I don’t have a limit,” she said. “People spend more money on weddings and adult parties and people say nothing.”
For Nerputh the party was also a chance to give back to the community.
“I am always doing community work and helping out non-profit organisations.
"When I was little my dad would have our birthday parties at the Aryan Benevolent Home and we would spend the day with the children there.”
Her other children, Junior, 19, a second-year law student, and Aryana, 16, a Grade 11 pupil, also joined in the fun.
