Durban - One person died and another was critically injured on the N2 south between the Mandini toll plaza and the Zinkwazi in KwaZulu-Natal following an accident on Friday, provincial emergency management services (EMS) said.

“The paramedics arrived on scene, which was covered in debris from the accident, to find two badly damaged motor vehicles,” said spokesman Robert McKenzie.

“Tragically one person died in the accident and had already passed away when the paramedics arrived.”

The critically injured person was treated on scene by paramedics, who had to get the injured person out the crumpled car using the Jaws of Life.

The injured person was then transported to hospital by a private ambulance service, while being treated by an advanced life support paramedic.

The cause of the accident was being investigated by police.

“Already today (Friday), which is the start of the school holidays in KZN, there have been several fatal accidents and drivers need to please exercise extreme caution while driving, to slow down and increase following distances,” said McKenzie.

“Road laws are there for a reason, to save lives and should not just be seen as suggestions that can be thought of occasionally.”
